Nichiren Shoshu
A Japanese sect that venerates the Buddhist monk Nichiren (1222-82 A.D.) as its founder. Members believe that in these times Nichiren is the only Buddha who can provide spiritual assistance. The second half of a text known as the Lotus Sutra is regarded as containing the essence of Buddhist truth. In the U.S., the term Nichiren Shoshu is applied to Soka Gakkai, a sect that emphasizes repetition of the verse namu myoho renge kyo (“Hail to the wonderful law of the lotus”).
