Buddhist Gateway Boards Female Monastics Should women have more access and authority in Buddhist monastic life? Are traditional Dharma teachings about male and female roles in monastic orders relevant today? ![]() ![]() harry - 05:07pm Oct 21, 2004 EST (# 7 of 16) Today
I find that modern teachings have less roles than old times. I think that back in the days we used to have women who plays quintessential roles in religious faiths, but after the last few millenia it's all changed, but I think it is changing again. Women are fighting back and gaining ground quickly.

I think that alot of men that are Buddhists believe that women cannot achieve enlightenment the way that man can, and I think that that is absurd. Whether woman or man, enlightenment is enlightenment and each human being can attain it. I feel that if woman want to join the monastic order that they should be able to.
tammie - 02:09pm Dec 20, 2004 EST (# 9 of 16) I agree with Raj..
I hate when people talk about gender and how men and women can or can't do certain things.. I really irks me. I think we are all human!

I have never seen or heard of a woman in the Buddhist order....
Olivia - 06:00pm Mar 28, 2006 EST (# 11 of 16) Women monks
I do not see why a woman can not become a monk. If she meets all the requirements, she should be allowed.
Katie - 02:49pm Sep 1, 2006 EST (# 12 of 16) Western female monks
I think if monks will become female, it will happen in the west first where the government may be more liberal to begin with.
Jess - 04:46pm Oct 4, 2006 EST (# 13 of 16) Women in religion
Women are slowly gaining the right to have leadership roles within religious communities. There needs to be a woman's religious liberation movement!

Of course women and men should have the same authority. It is difficult to break the line of tradition, though.
Trina Weh - 06:33pm Dec 13, 2008 EST (# 16 of 16) Slowly but surely
Women will integrate monasteries, but it will take a long time. One by one. the first ones
will be exceptional, and then they will become more and more ordinary....
