Buddhist Gateway Boards Vegetarian Life Buddhism teaches respect for the lives of all sentient beings. Many Buddhists believe this means abstaining from eating meat. Is vegetarianism necessary or important? Has it been a part of our spiritual path? ![]() ![]() Solarwind - 12:33pm Feb 11, 2005 EST (# 13 of 22) Vegetarian Diet
I eat mostly vegetarian food because I think it is healthy but from The Buddha's example not an absolute requirement when we don't have total control of our cicumstances. Vegetarianism is no guarantee of a person's virtue. Hitler was a vegetarian. Homage to the Triple Treasure SolarWind Aubrey1117 - 03:22am Feb 26, 2006 EST (# 14 of 22)
I dont think that being a vegetarian makes you a good person... but... I do believe you can be buddhist and eat meat. I guess it's like believing in Christ and breaking one of the ten commandments all the time... That's just my opinion. And I have no room to talk... because although I am vegan... I smoke... which is very "anti-buddhist" of me.

Right now, there are a lot of food choices so you can live a healthy life without eating meat. If I was stuck in the middle of nowhere and eating meat was my only way to survive, of course I would not be a vegeterian anymore.
Eric - 07:18pm Mar 28, 2006 EST (# 16 of 22) I agree with Aubrey
I think you can be a buddhist and still eat meat, like you can be jewish and not eat kosher. It is a choice.

It is really easy to be vegan or vegeterian. There are meat substitues that taste just like meat. And it is also healthier to become a vegeterian!

I love being a vegan. It is healthy and I know I am protecting the environment.

There aren't too many things wrong with a vegetarian diet. Everyone should try to eat more vegetables and less meat

I heard a great piece on Tempeh on NPR today!!! It actually tastes good when I've had it at
one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants, Red Bamboo in Brooklyn! http://www.redbamboobrooklyn.com/
henja_mieni - 01:12pm Mar 15, 2009 EST (# 22 of 22) being a vegetarian is a personal choice
I believe being a vegetarian is completely a personal choice. I seriously don't believe that eating a hamburger is any worse than eating cabbage or a carrot seeing as you kill those plants to eat them. Actually there are a lot of plants that die to feed us. I believe all living things are equal. Plants are not lower than animals. Plus, the first noble truth says life is suffering. I'm not saying do whatever you want because that's life. I'm just saying, for there to be life there has to be suffering. There is no way around it. I believe the buddha meant no murdering, which is different than killing.
